Children's Books

The “Even When I…” stories follow Avery, a Black girl navigating big feelings at school, in sports, and in community. Through family love, everyday moments, and simple social-emotional tools, Avery learns that her voice and her worth are with her in every room she enters.

About

Even When I Am Quiet

A picture book about a quiet Black girl who learns that even when her voice hides at school, it never disappears.

Even When I’m Nervous

A picture book about a Black girl swimmer who faces “the twisties” at tryouts and finds a brave voice that can swim alongside her nerves.

My work across Mahogany Protégé centers humanizing learning spaces where Black women and Black children can show up as their full selves. Avery’s stories grow directly out of that work and are written for quiet kids, Black girls who are often “the only one” in a room, and families and classrooms that want practical, loving ways to talk about feelings, courage, and the power of our voices.
